N.C. Mission of Mercy Dental Clinic

I'm working on a project about health care for my documentary course. I've been trying to cover a broad range of topics and one is dental. Dental is often not included in health coverage and is very expensive. People go for years neglecting their dental hygiene even though dental pain can be one of the most nagging and painful injuries to endure.

This two day clinic offered free dental services for patients and performed most dental procedures except root canals. On the second day, people began lining up at midnight to be seen at the clinic, which opened at 7 a.m. It took most people about 8 hours to be seen. Many of the people I spoke with had traveled from rural parts of North Carolina and had not been to a dentist in several years. I was surprised at how happy many of them were to be there even after waiting through the night and having one or more teeth pulled. To learn more about the dental clinics, visit the N.C. Protest in Pittsburgh

I went to Pittsburgh with two friends Thursday night and Friday to photograph the protests of the G20 Summit. This is just a couple of images from the protest. The night protest were intense scenes. Police in full riot regalia used smoke, tear gas, rubber bullets and physical force to remove the protesters from the area. Several people arrested were University of Pittsburgh students and other non-protesters who were out on just another Thursday and Friday night. The press were not to be distinguished from the protesters, to be arrested all the same. I will add more to this later.

galapagos livin'

I have nearly 10,000 photos and nearly 20 hours of audio from my travels. Here is only "making of" type images, none are from the actual project I did. I also have hundreds of other photos from my time in Ecuador that are not included in this video. My first two weeks in the Galapagos were spent on Isabela Island. On July 3rd, the entire group (from all islands) met on San Cristobal where we completed the edited process of our videos. It was an amazing trip and eye-opening. This being said, I think at the same time, the atmosphere makes it easy to forget the impact you are having on the islands. While it may be positive for those that live there, changes are definitely happening due to tourism that are impacting the eco-system in a negative way. This is a balancing act which our project aimed to address. A website is in production and will hopefully be online soon. The website will be: http://www.livinggalapagos.org

I made the drive to Dallas, TX from Wilmington last week. It was an eventful two day journey. The first picture is where I slept, a driveway in Nashville in my camry, or my car. The sun rises early in Nashville because they are just over the border for central time. I think this was at 5:30 a.m. and it's already over the horizon. The second is while driving in Arkansas, it is flat there. I leave for the Quito on Monday, but I'm making a weekend trip to Austin today.

I've been shooting a lot lately. Below are some, but not all of what's been going, and others are out-takes from assignments.

Betty Bigombe, a former minister of Uganda and peace negotiator, delivers her keynote speech Thursday discussing her mediations between the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group led by Joseph Kony, and the Ugandan government. Bigombe's speech was part of a week of events for Human Rights Week organized by Advocates for Human Rights.

From the press release:
Bigombe was appointed minister of the Ugandan Parliament in 1986 and minister of state for pacification of northern Uganda in 1988. Her task was to persuade the army of rebels to cease fighting and reach a peaceful resolution. In this role, she organized the first-ever face-to-face meeting between Lord Resistance Army head Joseph Kony and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The meeting paved the way for additional peace talks.

Greg Mortenson, author of "Three Cups of Tea," also spoke at UNC-Chapel Hill. Speaker assignments would be much more fun if they utilized awesome powerpoint pictures like Mortenson. His book has been on the New York Times Best Seller list for 112 weeks and is number one this week. I was able to meet him before his speech and he is very passionate about his work and the importance of education. I have not read his book, but I have a feeling it will be a good read.

mini-Ashley

This is from a "fashion" assignment for my studio class. After looking through several fashion magazines I realized there really was no overall theme. Some advertisements barely emphasized the item being sold, while others sacrificed them for product detail. This photo emphasizes scale more than the clothing.

After scouting for locations in Ashley's apartment complex (a 100 year old flour mill-turned-loft-apartments), I picked a few different areas, the one below being one of them. It wasn't until Ashley was in the doorway that I noticed she looked like a miniature person. I liked the look and told her to pose like a mannequin, and it worked, in my opinion. I think this would work well with a series of scale-focused images, or with incorporating mannequins into the image. Maybe I will follow through.

I posted a smaller version of the photo because it's important to see the whole frame at once to see the miniature-effect. Click on the image to see a larger version of the photo.

I've finally made the change to big pictures. This may mean slower uploading of the website, but it shouldn't be a problem if you pay for an internet connection, which I don't. So now you don't need to click on all the little pictures, not that you did before.

It is Kale's first time celebrating Holi in the United States. "It's the first time in a long time" Kale said who hasn't celebrated Holi since leaving India when she was 9 years old.

Holi is a Hinda celebration where colored powder is thrown at each other and mixed with water. I believe the idea behind it is unity. I will have a "portrait" series from this celebration soon.

Apparently, I've been taking pictures of animals. I was discussing with myself the other day how I didn't care too much for images with no point of focus, and now I'm posting three out of focus images because I like them. I am not sure what to think of that.

I went to the bay in Maryland over the break and here are some images. The ones of me in front of the lighthouse were photographed by Ashley. The selftrait (the first image) was done in Dallas as I have found myself with an abundance of time and limited options for activities lately. So I have read eight books now, become fairly good at pool, but recently found a free skate-park so that should help prevent me from taking more photographs of myself.

Apparently, I have an out-of-character, and serious, look of concentration, but I believe I was only thinking "wow, the sun is bright."

This needs a human in it, but no one wanted to be beautiful.

Robots

I know I haven't posted in a while, so this will be very anti-climatic. "Zaven Paré is a French new media artist who lives in Rio. He has won international acclaim for his electronic puppetry, stage design, video projections, and robotic art. He has collaborated with dancers and playwrights as well as with other digital artists and robotics engineers." This thing was pretty interesting, Pare would create a mold for the face, and then use a projector that would project up and then bounce off a mirror into the back of the mold. The image being projected was created by some sort of program that allowed Pare to make the robot talk and move it's eyes; I could definitely see this sort of technology used in the future.

The tiller race is a unique event in a town three hours away from Little Rock with a population of 359 according to the sign seen upon entering Emerson city limits. The tillers have motorcycle engines and race across a dirt field 200-feet in length at an average speed of 18 to 24 mph depending on the driver. The racers are not riding the tillers, they are desperately holding on and running behind them taking steps no shorter than 10 feet. The crowd is filled with travelers from around the south, some travel as many as 8 to 12 hours to come see the event. I know I would make the drive again. This year two women and three men competed, a small count compared to usual, but they hope more will enlist next year.

This is the dedication ceremony of a park opening in downtown Little Rock, I thought it looked like a fun park.

The Ozark Mission Project is a camp aimed to have teenagers help the community by building porches, wheelchair ramps and painting houses among other things for less fortunate and handicapped people.

The guy in the white shirt owns this house and was working in a shed in the backyard when he came out found his house on fire. No one was hurt and the fire burned throughout the inside of the house.

These are wildart pictures with absolutely no news value, yet they still run in the paper.

Internship in Little Rock!

I have been sick the past two weeks and at some point I received pneumonia. I am getting better though. Here are some images from when I have actually been able to work, I will give them brief captions. The first four images are from Riverfest, a big festival that happened a couple of weeks ago here in Little/North Little Rock.

This bride was shot shortly after being announced married to her husband, who was also shot, both survived. And they told me Little Rock was dangerous.

This is the second potter, Fred Johnston, I photographed for our photojournalism class. I really liked the building which he built himself. He is a very nice and interesting/inspiring person, I will post a soundslide with more images and audio later this week. I used two strobes. One SB-24 hidden in wood pile on left providing mostly fill light. The second out of frame on right on a light stand set to full power. I pretty much blasted him with light so I could underexpose the entire scene by a couple of stops. This allowed me to keep a deep blue sky without having everything else extremely dark.

This is an assignment for the multimedia class to document a place using only natural sound, images, and royalty free music. Other requirements were 15-20 images and 60 seconds in length. Some images were by me, most were done by Ashley Ross. The final shot is the cue ball smacking my lens. Fortunately, it was protected by a UV filter and amazingly, nothing was broken. I almost wish it would have hit me in the head rather than the lens. Full resolution version is here.

Color images were shot on Kodak E100G Vivid Saturation and the black and white image was shot with Tri-X 400 and processed in HC-110 Sol. B.

Charleston citizens watch as former President Clinton walks through the downtown market area.

I'm not sure about the cropping on this, it is full frame now, I might come in on it later. The light is bouncing off a heavily windowed building making it back lit with a front lit fill. I mainly like how it made the tree look.

This was in New Hope, Pennsylvania in an alley next to an interesting costume shop. Manikins. The toning needs a little more work as well, it was quite underexposed.

I actually carried my tripod with me and shot this at 200 ISO right after dusk using tungsten white balance, which made the sky become a much more vibrant blue. This was a 4 second exposure at f/3.5. I think a slightly shorter exposure would have made the fireworks a little more defined. Can't win em' all.

This was inside a storage container at a church that collects and gives out clothes and food to those in need. The blown out area behind her is outside, I tried doing some balancing with a strobe, but it didn't look any good in this situation and I would have lost the window light.

The bin consisted of bread, a ham and turkey, canned foods, and preperation products such as sugar and flour. The Marine Contingent at the NROTC of Citadel College collected over 8200 cans and 30 frozen turkeys that were donated to the Low Country Food Bank and Crisis Ministries. Five bins consisting of everything needed for a complete Thanksgiving meal were delivered to five area families.

This was my first time using a 500mm lens, and though it is very tight (this is full frame) making it a little difficult to get everything in the frame, it is worth it when you do get a shot because it cleans the background up so well.

Bill Clinton, Fishing and Tearsheets!

I always end up photographing someone fishing. The red-drum tagging assignment was fun as I was able to ride around on a boat on a nice semi-warm sunny day for four hours. I spent 10 hours at a civil war re-enactment on Saturday, I'll post a soundslide for that once I edit from the 900+ photos I took that day.

I liked the fisherman one better, but they published this one instead, probably because it had the coast guard dingy in the frame.

Harry Noisette, of Charleston, SC, does not let the Seafair, a yacht that ran aground, change his fishing routine Friday morning, Nov. 2, 2007, at the Battery, in Charleston, SC. "I've never seen anything like this before...I've been fishing out here all my life," said Noisette about the grounded yacht. The $60 million yacht houses a traveling art exhibit with 28 galleries that will stop in 36 small ports throughout its 44 week tour of the east coast. David and Lee Ann Lester, the owners of the yacht, hope to raise money to donate to the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston.

My first time shooting daytime football, was pretty awesome, no flash and 200 ISO is a dream, although toward the end of the third quarter half the field was in shadow so you had to hope what you exposed for was where the play was going to happen.

Hockey was fun to shoot, the light is amazing in comparison to Friday night football; the ice makes for a nice fill card. I also had my first color stuff published of that butterfly guy, fun stuff.

Internship Update!

I've been shooting some at the local fair and mostly riding with other photographers at this point, however, I'm supposed to be going on my own assignments soon. I was able to ride in a helicopter at the fair which is how I was able to capture the overview. The butterfly guy below was an interesting character as well (no butterflies were harmed, well maybe mentally, but not physically).

They needed a photograph of a flag to run soon for Veteran's Day and drove by this on my day off. The flag was massive, at least 20 feet in width, and the sky looked as though it were on fire, the biggest trouble was finding an angle with no power lines, trees, streetlights, etc. and waiting for a strong enough gust to get it to blow in the wind.

A Weak Weekly!

This is of the NC Spot Festival in Hampstead, NC. The text offers the information about the festival. Somehow I managed to shoot the whole thing at 800 ISO, which is fun, and loud with all that noise. This is probably one of the weakest things I’ve ever put out so don’t look at it too hard, please.
Shot with D200, 17-35mm, and 35-70mm, off-camera SB-800, and a really high shutter, considering I was at 800 ISO at high noon.

Skateboarding and Roof Tops, Again!

So I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get on this roof, and I finally did. I played with it in photoshop to make it look better than it did, I added some grain and made it contrasty because it was really ugly and boring before. Maybe it still is, you decide. The skateboarder is Timmy Jarmin.

Sportraits!

We had to shoot environmental sports portraits for Bill, I couldn't decide between these two. What do you think?

The sun was about two feet from coming around the building and creating this light, but it wasn't going to make it before sunset so I had to light it instead, I used an orange gel to create a golden look. I used a slight fill on the left, but I don't think it was strong enough.

After shooting the portrait above, I wanted to try a portrait for a more traditional sport so I shot my friend Nick Meadows covered in golf balls. Bounced the flash off the ceiling and used a 1/250th shutter speed to overpower the exiting tungsten light. If I were to reshoot I would light it a little more from the side to add some shadows on his face so it wouldn't be so flat; and I would probably try to get more golf balls so I wouldn't have to crop so tight on his face (this is full frame). I like the expression though.

Roof Climbing and Skateboarding!

I had to climb on top of the roof of this school in Wake Forest to get this shot. Some really nice light was coming in through the trees and hitting his face right when he was coming down the rail. I had an off camera flash set up behind him on the left to help light the entire scene because it was getting dark where he was.

My friend began filming and was messing up my shot so I moved to the right and used the trees to block him from being in my shot. I like the way the light is hitting his hair.

Studio!

Tried to get back into the studio one evening only to find I had no ideas. Wanted some sort of vegetable/kitchen stock type of shot, but it didn't come out really how I wanted. Next time I will brainstorm more and hopefully escape more successful. I used a 750 bounced off a fill card on a light table, with a mini-mole gel aimed at a wall in the back. This is also a nice example of the blooming around the jalapeños.

Flowers at II's!

I believe this is a Datura, also called the Devil's Trumpet, it blooms at night and wilts in the day (if this is wrong, tell me). Used a flash with a diffusion card over the front and sidelit it as to not have light spill into the background. Also used the 1/250th sync to get rid of any ambient light. The hard part was the focusing, which consisted of setting the lens to it's minimum focusing distance and moving either closer or further away from it while snapping photos until I had one in focus. Oh yeah, this is not studio.

1304 Bikes!

Kelly Beck, of Raleigh, NC, hopes the new Earn-a-Bike program at 1304 Bikes will bring order to the volunteer-ran community bike project in Raleigh, NC. The new program accesses each donated bike based on condition. More volunteer hours are required for bikes in better condition. After volunteering with cleaning and organizing for the given amount of hours, the volunteer can begin to work on the bicycle. After the bike is complete the volunteer can leave or stay and continue to volunteer. 1304 Bikes is located at Chamberlain and Mayview St.. and opens shop Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. and Thursday 6 to 9 p.m.

Cross-Processed Cigarettes!

I found a 10 year old roll of Fuji Provia (Transparency Film) and put it to use. Had it processed through a C-41 process and color printed it on the RA-4. It had strange color casts which were hard to figure out, the negative is almost completely blue. The image here is a scan of the negative, not the print.
